A wool pea coat is there to draw reverence and dignity though it is composed of coarse materials. In the early part of the twentieth century the pea coats were donned by the sailors and the men and women of the US navy. Those pea coats were made in a special manner from rough wool as the sailors had to take voyage amid rough climate during the winter season. The trade marks of the wool coat were the double breast pockets along with large lapels. Sometimes wooden buttons were used on the front part.
There is enough contradiction regarding the name of the wool coat. Some are of opinions that the coats were made of pilot cloth that was very durable and tough. Naval men generally used the coats then. The coats were called Pilot Coats at that time. Gradually the word Pilot became obsolete and only the P remained to add its relation with the past. The present wool pea coat is nothing but a derivative of the old Pilot coat that was very popular among the men of the navy and the merchant ships.
The classical wool pea coat gradually takes a modern shape and gradually slips into the arena of general outfits. Civilians who have no connection with the navy or ship voyages begin to don it in various manners. Now the wool coats that are sold in the market are not made by the US naval force. As wool coat has a classical touch it is a hot favorite among the people who believe in change in the trend of fashion.
The non navy wool pea coats are not made sans the classic style. Actually those who prefer to wear it want to add a macho image in their personality. Hence the style is kept intact keeping in view the antique flavor. Still if someone prefers a modern touch one may have it through different colors and specifically in modern trendy fashions. The pea coat is there the wool is there only the outer shape has been modernized as per the modern demand. Still wool pea coat has a place of its own in all respect.
